Reading has become a chore for most kids today and they would rather pop in a DVD, surf the internet, or sit around playing games. This is not just a phenomenon, it is an epidemic. The reality is that books are more than just for reading about boring facts, but about exploring the world. Books should be used by teachers, parents, and librarians to encourage growth in students. Physiologically books help promote proper brain development and proper oxygenation of the blood vessels in the brain. Books have many purposes beyond simple entertainment for those who enjoy them.

Reading for comprehension is a lost art. As students are reading, if they are able to connect the book with the world around them, they will be better able to retain the information received. Reading is a sport for some individuals and for others they cringe at the thought of having to read. Books are supposed to be tools of exploration about the many subjects that a person may find interesting.

Although books can be used to teach people, they can also be used to reach people. Books are tools for helping groups of individuals to better understand other groups of individuals. Books can be used as a tool to eliminate racism and discrimination against misunderstood individuals.
